Please note that there are no exceptions to this rule. This course is aimed at individuals in organisations who use video as a communication tool.

Making the Short Film (This is a one-day workshop)

Monday October 29th

This intensive one-day workshop is designed to give you all the know how on what it takes to make the short film. The process of producing a short drama film is complex and demanding and this workshop gives a fundamental understanding of what is required including script development, storyboarding, preparing a budget, organising a shoot, postproduction and distribution.

Hugh McGrory is an experienced Director/Producer and former Production Executive for Northern Ireland Screen’s DEVIATE short film scheme.

Directing Workshop (This is a one day workshop)

Tuesday October 30th

This introductory workshop for those interested in film direction and who want to gain greater control over their films covers what is expected of a director in pre-production, casting and rehearsal, script break down and analysis and the collaboration necessary with other key departments.

Introduction to Final Cut Pro  (This is a two-day workshop

Monday November 12th and Tuesday November 13th OR

Tuesday February 12th and Wednesday February 13th

Tutor Brian Davis * 6 participants * Workshop Fee £70 Concession £45 10.00 am – 5.00pm

Final Cut Pro has become popular software for non-linear editing on Apple Computers because of its smooth integration of firewire and its undoubted ease of use and versatility. The workshop covers all the basics of Final Cut Pro. Previous editing experience preferred but not essential.

Brian Davis is an experienced editor of film, television and music video, and lecturer of Visual Communication at the University of Ulster.

Beginner’s Crash Course Video (This is a one-day workshop)

Monday November 19th OR Friday January 11th 10.00am – 5.00pm

Tutor Simon Wood * 6 participants * Workshop Fee £35 Concession £20

An introductory workshop to digital video. Topics include camera options, tape formats and sound options. Practical hands on experience, including short location shoot. Suitable for those who want to get the best out of their video camcorder. No experience necessary.

Simon Wood has many years of experience recording for documentary, factual and news programming.

Sound Recording by Design (This is a one-day workshop)

Friday November 30th OR Monday February 4th

Uncover the hidden dimension of good film and video production! This intensive workshop explores the techniques of sound recording, use of mixes, booming, mic select6ion, wild track and ambience. Participants will record sound in a team approach with everyone having an opportunity for hands on experience. The results will be analysed and discussed. Difficult sound recording situations and audio problems will be addressed.

Simon Wood has many years of experience recording for documentary, factual and news programming.

Intermediate Final Cut Pro (This is a one day workshop)

Tuesday December 4th

This workshop builds on skills acquired in Introduction to Final Cut Pro. Using documentary footage, participants take an in depth look at how to finesse edits in the timeline, colour correct footage, import graphics, use match frame commands, video filters, key frames for motion, work with audio wave forms, audio mixing, maintain sync and rendering.

The Art of Editing

Tuesday December 11th

For filmmakers and artists alike this class looks at editing as an art form using finished pieces as examples and working backwards to see how they were constructed. From traditional narrative film to music video and experimental video art this class explores various ways in which clips can be sequenced to achieve different reactions. Intended for those who want to express themselves and make a statement through moving image.

Making the Documentary (This is a one-day workshop)

Tutors Michael Hewitt & Dermot  Lavery of Double Bnad Films * Workshop Fee £25 Concession £15

Overview of the process of documentary production discussing the elements of film style and subjectivity. Interview techniques, narrative and documentary structure, editing, use of music, teamwork and ethics of documentary filmmaking. Illustrated with examples from the filmmakers' work.

Double Band Films' producer/directors Dermot Lavery and Michael Hewitt have a long track record in making documentaries for a range of broadcasters including Channel Four, BBC NI and RTE. The company's recent credits include From Belfast to Dachau (BBC NI, winner of the RTS Best Regional Documentary, 2006), Face-Off: de Valera v Churchill (RTE, 2007), Making the Monkees (C4, 2007) and Monkey Love (C4, 2005) and most recently The Poppy Day Bomb (BBC 2007)

Getting Started - Production Information Seminar with Northern Ireland Screen

An opportunity to meet Andrew Reid and Elsie Brown from the NIFTC to discuss the current funding opportunities available from the Commission and to put your questions and  ideas. Are showreels and pilots a good thing to do? What film ideas are more likely to succeed? What sort of timescale should you aim for? Need terminology explained? Help understanding budget headings? There will be an opportunity to see excerpts from recent works that the Commission has supported.
