Augusto Boal in Belfast
Augusto Boal is a Brazilian theatre director, writer and political activist. He is the founding father of Theatre of the Oppressed - an arsenal of techniques to empower the passive spectator to become the active performer as a rehearsal for change in his/her own life. He was persecuted by the Brazilian government, imprisoned, tortured and exiled. Boal returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1986. Elected as a city councillor 'Vereador' Boal developed 'Legislative Theatre' to discuss what kinds of legislation was needed to address community problems.

In October 1989 Augusto visited Belfast delivering a lecture to a packed hall and visited theatre and community groups from either side of the divide in Belfast hearing their hopes, fears, dreams….and common frustrations.
