about volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering.

We believe making films and television programmes is a creative process and telling our own stories and sharing our experiences with others through local television and the Internet underpins democracy.

We believe it is every citizen's right to communicate, that the public sphere should be accessible to all citizens, it is not enough to guarantee freedom of expression and the right to information. It is also necessary to ensure that citizens have the means to communicate and have equal access to the public sphere.
Volunteering at Northern Visions is open to everyone who is resident in Northern Ireland on a permanent basis, completes our orientation session and accepts our policies.

Donations are very gratefully received to support our volunteers and our community media and media literacy work in disadvantaged areas.

what our volunteers say
“It was fantastic. It was great to have the freedom to write my own scripts and present in my own style. This has led me to gain more presenting work and improved my confidence in being in front of the camera. I'm getting a lot of acting work as a result too. I'm really grateful to NvTv for the opportunities to explore presenting in a supportive environment. It's such a hard field to get experience in, I feel lucky to have had the chance to get so much with NvTv.”

“My grandmother often watches NvTv and she told me about the range of programmes that I would be interested in. So I watched the channel and I thought there were some really brilliant programmes. I was Producer on a programme and also was interviewer on the day. I also helped out animating a healthy eating programme for children. Everything was so lovely about the experience at NvTv - I would never hesitate to help them out in anyway I could and to make another programme.” - teenage volunteer
“I really enjoyed the level of flexibility and responsibility that was afforded to me by the staff at NvTv. In my first week there I was shown through the basic workings of camera, edit and general production, encompassing, but not limited to, going out into town for vox-pop interviews for documentaries, and seeing behind the scenes into life in their studio. I worked through the online training on Final Cut Pro (editing software), and set to work on a programme about a ‘shared community’. It was great to see this put on air. It was very reaffirming to me that this was the right career line that I should follow. A fantastic introduction to media and film production on one side, but also the general nature of how interesting the work was, and how rewarding the outcome. I was not discouraged by any minor failings, and I feel this was due to the dedication and interest the staff took in helping my development. I would thoroughly recommend the experience, and also am a keen supporter of this form of public service broadcasting for its benefit to the local community.”

“The tutoring was great hands-on experience, with learning about the process as you went through it step by step. When I finished the journalism school I had learnt a huge amount about documentary filmmaking, of which I knew nothing before.”
