shipyard stories

Much has been written about Harland & Wolff, but many of the best stories remain untold!

Currently in production, Shipyard Stories records the stories of former Harland & Wolff shipyard workers, and through those stories illustrates what life was like in what was once the greatest shipyard in the world.

The series will feature personal photos, cine and video film shot by H&W employees at work and never broadcast before.

So far, producer Pete Bleakley and his researchers, Bobby Foster and William 'Plum' Smith have traced former shipyard workers as far back as 1944, when as 14 year olds, Belfast lads recall working on urgent warship repairs...

But it's not just 'war stories' that the series is documenting. Shipyard 'characters' from the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s are all taking part - drawn from every trade in the yard from labourers to top management.

Over time this series is intended to become the definitive H&W televisual history - living history - told by those who made it. The shipbuilding process will be explained, and there will be funny stories, horror stories and the tales of the unexpected from what was, effectively, a separate 'city by the sea.'

NvTv is working in association with Harland & Wolff and the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum - home to the tremendous H&W photo and document archive - on this important heritage project.

All interviews and finished programmes will be archived by the Ulster Folk Transport Museum for the benefit of future generations.
