NI Music – The Way Forward

NvTv goes along to NIMIC's annual music industry conference. It's the chance for local bands, managers, promoters and everyone else in the music business to get advice from industry experts. We talk to Jonny Davis of Sony, Stuart Bailie of Oh Yeah centre and Feargal Sharkey about the issues facing the music industry today and what advice they would give to bands.

Kick out the Jams - Heliopause

KOTJ welcomes Heliopause into the studio, who are the creation of artist Richard Davis. The band have only played a handful of gigs to date and are planning to release their first recordings this year. Their music has been compared to the likes of American Analogue Set and Grandaddy.

Ham Sandwich released their debut album in Ireland and the UK, played many gigs including Glastonbury, scooped the Hope for 2008 award at the Meteor's and singer Niamh also recently gave birth to a baby boy. Kick out the Jams - Ricky Warwick

Ricky Warwick is probably best known for fronting rock band, The Almighty, who have previously enjoyed ten Top 40 singles and four Top 20 albums in the UK. Ricky is currently working on his third solo album and touring Ireland but took time out to drop into the NvTv studio to lay down a few acoustic tracks.

Kick out the Jams - David Geraghty

AU Magazine's Jonny Tiernan introduces the session by the Bell X1 guitarist, who came into the NvTv studios to play as his solo project. His debut single was released in June 2007 and since then he has been getting widespread recognition as a performer in his own right. David was short listed for the Choice Music Award as well as receiving two nominations for Meteor Awards.

Dolbro Dan aka Daniel Mulligan is a 23 year old songwriter from Bangor, Northern Ireland. ClearIy influenced by Bob Dylan, he plays his own alternative folk songs on harmonica and 'dobro' resonator guitar.

Kick out the Jams - Rumble Strips

The English band are regulars on the likes of MTV and attracted a sell-out crowd in their recent Belfast gig. Kick Out The Jams emptied the cupboards in search of more microphones as 12-piece band/choir/orchestra, Lowly Knights, arrived at the studios. Music! It's the Business
The Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission held a NI "Music! It's The Business" information and conference at the Whitla Hall on Monday 9th of October. Speakers Included Feargal Sharkey, Jon Webster and Harry Martin. We went down and interviewed the main players as well as local band members there to gain valuable industry contacts and experience.

Formed in 2004, The Vals started playing acoustic gigs around Belfast and were the first band to rock the Culturlann among other places. For Kick out the Jams, they made a trip into the studio to perform.

Kerrie Ann Gallagher  was invited into the NvTv studio for an acoustic performance. Kerrie Ann was in a local rock band called Pulsar before they went their separate ways, but here we find a more delicate side of her music, which she has been performing more recently on the local scene.

Therapy? are one of Northern Irelands biggest bands of all time. In their nineteen year history there has been many ups and downs but their latest album Crooked Timber is set to be one of their best yet. Kick out the Jams - Neon Neon
Neon Neon, who were nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize, recently played Belfast's Stiff Kitten.  They found time to play 3 exclusive tracks and have a chat about their album, Stainless Style, themed around the fast talking American, John DeLorean, whose dreams of a sports car empire in Belfast crumbled in the 1980s. As part of NvTv's CQAF sessions we invited one of Northern Irelands best up-and-coming bands to perform in-front of a small studio audience. Having just released their debut single 'Young Blood', the band are about to embark on their first UK tour. They are definitely a band to watch for the future.

Robin's Big Music Show 2 
Hazel O'Connor, the artist responsible for the massive 80's hit Will You and also star of the Cult movie Breaking Glass drops into the studio for another exclusive live performance and chats to Robin about her interesting and sometimes controversial career. Kick out the Jams - Leya 

Leya was voted IRELAND'S MOST PROMISING BAND FOR 2006 by HOTPRESS magazine. The band signed to Rubyworks records and released their long awaited debut album, 'Watch you don't take off' in the UK and in Ireland. The programme consists of 6 songs performed by frontman Ciaran Gribben and bassist Gareth Hughes.

Robin's Big Music Show 1

Also on this week's show Robin chats to legendary singer/songwriter Paul Brady about his classic songs including Crazy Dreams and The World Is What You Make It. Robin's Big Music Show 3 
Robin meets another Irish music legend in this special series. Over the years Christie Hennessey has written hit songs for Christy Moore, Frances Black and Moya Brennan  as well as his own big hits including Roll Back The Clouds. As well as performing another exclusive session for NVTV, Christie also chats to Robin about leaving Tralee at the age of 15 and working on the London building sites during the day while at night playing some of London's R&B clubs. Robin also meets American country legend Hal Ketchum.

Kick out the Jams - Dan Donnelly

Dan Donnelly comes into the NvTv studios for a special acoustic set. Dan, who lives in New York, was the lead singer in Watercress in the early 1990's and enjoyed widespread acclaim. He now tours with his new band Sonovagun throughout America.
