Introductory day
The young people were introduced to each other and instead of getting bogged down in the formalities of the project we got straight into making a short film about what they hoped to achieve from being involved in the A-Team. I was surprised to find out that they wanted a wider range of experience than I had thought; that is to say that not everyone wanted to be director or camera as one might expect from a group of young people beginning a film course. I decided to throw them in at the deep end and got the group using blue screen. They grabbed the concept of lighting and editing for blue screen very quickly and were very confident in front of and behind camera. By the end of the day they had constructed a 5 min programme and were each given a VHS to keep a record of the films they would make in workshops. All in all the first day was a very successful one and raised a good deal of optimism for the end result.

Script Discussion
At the start of the day the group were handed the first draft of the script "Giants." The aim of today's session was to get their feedback and to get them thinking in terms of a shot list and how a film would be constructed. They raised a lot of good questions about the logistics of the script and contributed good ideas for the overall look of the film in terms of set, costume and makeup. They organised themselves into a crew and shot a 30-sec clip from the film. The scene involved a ladder, which seemed to go on forever and ever. They bravely tried to achieve this effect with the use of blue screen, but it didn't really work. This was a good lesson for them to learn and new ideas needed to be proposed for how to achieve this shot if it was to stay in the script. Today was also the beginning of the discussion about job roles on the film.

Discuss Script changes/Go to cinema
The aim of today was basically to take it easy before the start of the technical workshops. The group looked at the revised script and contributed their opinions. We then took the group to the cinema for the duration of the day.
