15th March 2002 We took over Gemma's house to shoot the family scene in the commercial. No one could improve on my script for the rhyme so we went ahead and got Amelia, Cormac, Yvonne (Gemma's mum) and Brian (Mairead's Dad) to recite the Magherafelt ditty. We shot an alternative few lines in case the ditty proved too much in the edit. Yvonne's living room was turned into the ideal Magherafelt home and everything went very well. The closing few seconds of this scene were edited so that it could be projected in the cinema. Simon
19th March 2002 We met at the Magherafelt Youth Office, which was previously Patsy's base, a visit to old haunts for the kids. Initially we had wanted to interview Deirdre, a youth worker, and some of the young people she works with, but she wanted to be interviewed separately. The set up was quite difficult because the room has a big window but the light was failing. We also had to set up the opening shot to be a smooth transition from the virtual space. We got the interview done with Susan on camera, Gemma on sound and Martina directing. The exterior shot was a rush but it turned out fine. Amelia and Cormac have learnt quite well how to introduce an interviewee to the areas they want to cover - they take the interviewee to one side and run through the questions and ask for additional issues that the person might want to talk about - Martina usually gets involved and the resulting interview flows quite smoothly.
