Monday 14th January 2002
There was some doubt about whether the meeting should go ahead. The local youth worker, is ill in hospital and the tension in the Ballysillan area was high after the murder of a postman in Rathcoole, the weekend rioting and attacks on schools.
The lady who runs the Ballysillan Community Forum where the meetings are held had arranged for another worker to open up on Monday evening and thought that we should go ahead.
I had arranged for Daphne to attend the meeting to let the young people know what sort of research has already been done on Ballysillan and which areas they would like more information on.
While a couple of them learned a bit about editing, the rest interviewed Daphne on video. After that we all had a lively discussion about a whole range of issues. It was disrupted somewhat by a couple of the lads especially David. This may have been because of the tense situation in the area or maybe just because Anne wasn't there, but it slowed the whole thing down. All the same the young people were very open about a lot of personal issues and we narrowed the field down to education, parenting and the image of loyalist communities. Daphne will report back the next time.
