November 15th
This is a lively group that needs a lot of direction. One or two are very keen on particular roles (ie editing and sound), and some are quite definite that they don't want to appear on camera. One turns out to be an incisive interviewer.
Their film is to be about growing up in the Ballysillan area. It allows for a wide range of subjects and styles and we are concentrating on coming up with good stories.
There was a point where a young man operating the camera filmed bits of people inappropriately for a laugh. When we played the tape back he got his laugh but I managed to use it as an example of the need for good child protection practices - they got the message that what starts as a laugh could become a serious allegation of child abuse.
I found explaining the contents of the contract to each of the participants to be a useful exercise - it can be referred to in future disagreements especially about participants' behaviour.
