The mid week meeting at Northern Visions concluded that we should go with Shpresa's story as the final film idea, with the group organising a party for her. I was a bit disappointed that the ideas from the previous session weren't taken up and slightly concerned that members of the group might not want to be part of the film's subject matter.
Louanne told the group Shpresa's story, about the parties she used to have during curfew and how she got out of Kosovo and ended up in Belfast. We then divided into two groups to discuss ways of structuring a film around organising a party for Shpresa. We discussed ways to tell the story and introduce a more multicultural theme to the party. Marianne and Kudze were excited by the idea of becoming art directors and designing wall panels from their different parts of the world. There was a significant age divide within my group and I found it difficult to bring the ideas together. Shpresa's input was of course informative, as the group tried to find out what her parties had been like. The ideas coming from the very young members were from a more 'staged' or drama perspective, they were obviously excited by the prospect of organising a party. We looked at the differences and similarities between Northern Ireland and Kosovo as a possible link from Shpresa's story (footage from Shpresa's return visit perhaps) to her making Northern Ireland her new home were she now has a wider cultural understanding and is happy here.
Personally, I am concerned that the final film might end up too messy and confusing if we try to introduce too much in 10 minutes. I am also concerned that the party will appear staged and unsympathetic to Shpresa if there is too much emphasis on the multi cultural traditions of the group without relating them in some way to her story.
