Saturday Saturday 1st Dec. 2001
This week, we were shooting a cookery demonstration in an attempt to introduce the concept of how to film a sequence. We decided on the various roles, with Kudze as Director, Samuel as Camera Operator, Nicholas as Sound Recordist, Shepresa as Production Assistant and Marianne as Presenter. The group soon realised that there was a lot to think about and that it could be a challenging and very 'cramped' experience. Kudze's role as Director was particularly demanding, especially when there is a variety of enthusiastic opinions in a very tight space. Initially, I thought it might have been too much to expect from such a young first timer, but we decided not to get too bothered with discussing the sequence of shots needed to cut it together as any mistakes we come across in the edit will be our best way to learn. Kudze soon relaxed into her role, as did the others who all seemed satisfied with the exercise.
The Sharma girls arrived toward the end of the exercise and practised some camera skills with a second camera while Louanne and the others finished their cookery shoot. The Sharma's don't think they can make it next week, when we will be shooting at Kudze's circus school, so I let them take home the video diary camera, as they are very keen to keep involved. As we tasted the finished products from the cookery shoot, a technical glitch with the laptop proved a welcome excuse for most of the group to enjoy the play facilities in the building. So we called it a day on the practical side with a view to reviewing and editing the material in another session. Instead we talked about getting material into the diary/ideas books. The Sharma girls dancing at St. George's market isn't happening this year due to constrictions on space, but we could possibly film the dancing at our base. We may also be able to do some filming on a traditional Irish music class, which happens at the centre. The group would like to rotate the technical roles, so filming shorter sequences would be good in developing skills. Next week we are meeting up earlier at Kudze's circus school to film Kudze and her friend practising for the cabaret.
