Saturday 10th November 2001.
I thought the session went well. As you know, the Multi Cultural Resource Centre group is unusual in that they have come together for this project. They have never met or worked together before. Consequently, it will take a little time for them to build up relationships and trust. Fortunately, they are all really enjoying themselves and can't wait to get stuck in.
Points to bear in mind:
- Ramadan is starting this weekend. At least two of the young people are Muslim, though I don't know how strict their families are.
- As this group is new, it is important to listen to their experiences carefully. It takes courage to share experiences in front of people you don't know and the adults need to encourage and support the young people. It is tempting sometimes to jump in and take control a bit. What we must not do, even when our intentions are the best, is deny someone's interpretation of their experiences.
From the parents and children I have spoken to everyone is really enjoying themselves and very excited about the project.
