COLLEGES OF FURTHER & HIGHER EDUCATION
Further education institutes offer a range of media courses at various levels, including GCSE, A Level and BTEC levels. As a guide, details on courses currently available at the BIFHE Millfield  campus are provided below, but similar courses run at various other campuses across Northern Ireland.

Two courses available:
1. AVCE in Media
Course Content: Professional practices, production processes (film, audio, editing), media theory, photography, design, advertising, marketing, video industry.
Equivalent to:  2 A Levels
Entry criteria: 4 GSCEs, including English and Maths
Other:  Assessment rather than exam-based.
2. BTEC HND in Media
Course content: Contextual media studies, media industries, media projects, research techniques, moving image/production, editing, film studies, scriptwriting, multi media web authoring, audio skills, audio scripting, feature production, reading/television, camera & lighting, documentary.
All candidates apply for the course, then after a couple months choose to specialise in either (1) Media Writing, or (2) Media Image
Entry criteria: 1 A Level, 3/4 GSCEs
Other:  CAT-point based. 

  • There are very few courses left for this year. If applying for next year, advised to apply before Christmas 2003.
  • Other BIFHE Colleges may also do media courses, including Castlereagh.
  • Above HND level, the next step would be university courses.

  • Oct-July
  • First preference for places goes to over-25s who have been unemployed for six months. The course is free for this group.
  • If all places aren't filled, anyone of any age can apply.   
  • The course for this group costs £200 for the year.

YOUNG IRISH FILM MAKERS: NATIONAL YOUTH FILM SCHOOL

  • A five-week residential film training and production programme for 25 young Irish film makers.
  • The first week is an intensive full immersion introduction to film production. You will learn how to use broadcast digital cameras, lighting, DAT sound equipment and how to work as a part of a film crew. You will take part in producing and directing sessions. Actors will learn all the skills of film acting. Technical crew will learn how to build scenery, make costumes and props. There will also be classes on film history and theory.
  • The next four weeks will be spent using all the skills you have learned to shoot a full-length digital feature film on location in our film studios. The final film will be a showcase/portfolio for your talent in whatever area you have chosen to specialise.
  • Any young Irish (incl. Northern Ireland) person aged

14-20 can apply for the programme. Auditions and interviews will be held at various venues around the country

  • Cost is €700. Some scholarships may be available.

DREAMLAB INVEST
PROOF OF CONCEPT FUND

  • The fund aims to support the development of early-stage ideas (proof of concept) through financial assistance with a development and support network designed to help realise creative ideas.
  • The key purpose of the fund is the creation of original content using digital technology to include the following sectors: film production, TV production, music, computer games, new media, packaged software, digital imaging, design.
  • Anyone of any age can apply.
  • No educational requirements.
  • Priority given to innovative and commercially attractive ideas arising from the collaboration between two or more of the above areas.
  • Projects from solo entrepreneurs and creators also considered.
  • Grants of between £500-£10,000 available.
